Direct Billing for Registered Clinical Counselling (RCC)
We know that accessing support can already feel like a big step. Navigating insurance and reimbursement shouldn’t add extra stress. That’s why we offer direct billing for many extended health benefit plans—so you can focus on getting help when you need it.
What is Direct Billing?
Direct billing means we submit your session fee directly to your insurance provider on your behalf. If your plan includes coverage for counselling services, you’ll only be responsible for any portion not covered (such as a co-pay or deductible) at the time of your appointment.
Insurance Providers
We currently offer direct billing through:
- Telus eClaims
- Canada Life
- Green Shield Canada
- Pacific Blue Cross
- Sun Life
If you’re covered under one of these providers, we’ll do our best to process your claim right after your session. You can provide the details to us in your intake form so that it is listed on your file.
Important Considerations with Direct Billing
Every plan is different: Coverage for counselling services varies widely between plans. It is the client’s responsibility to confirm their coverage prior to their first session, including annual maximums, deductibles, co-payments, and eligible provider designations.
Provider designation matters: Some plans only cover certain professional designations (such as Registered Clinical Counsellors, Psychologists, or Social Workers). All counsellors at Illuminate are Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). We’re happy to help you confirm whether this designation is covered under your specific plan.
You are responsible for any remaining balance: If your insurance does not cover the full fee, the remaining portion will be charged to your credit card on file.
Occasional claim issues: If a claim is declined for any reason, the full session fee will become your responsibility. We’ll always provide a receipt so you can follow up with your insurer if needed.
Prefer to submit your own claims?
You’re always welcome to handle claims directly with your insurance provider instead of using direct billing. After each session, we’ll provide a detailed invoice that you can submit for reimbursement.
When direct billing isn’t available
If your plan doesn’t allow direct billing, you can still attend your session as usual and submit your receipt for reimbursement. We’ll provide everything you need to make that process as smooth as possible.
Please read our FAQ below, and if you still have questions, reach out to info@illuminate-online.com
"How do I know if I'm covered for counselling?"
The best way is to check directly with your insurance provider before your first session. You can usually find this information in your benefits booklet or online portal. Be sure to confirm:
- coverage for counselling, psychotherapy, or mental health services (read more about the different types of providers here)
- your annual maximum
- any deductible or co-pay
- whether Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) are covered
"What if I'm on parental leave or in between jobs?"
Many people continue to have extended health benefits during parental leave, though coverage can vary. If you’re between roles or your coverage has recently changed, it’s important to confirm that your benefits are active and what coverage remains for the year.
"Does my plan cover virtual and in-person sessions?"
Good question! Most plans that cover counselling view Telehealth and in-person sessions as comparable, recognizing that many people like to have options when accessing mental health support. If you want to be sure, best to double-check with your insurance provider. If you aren’t sure which one is for you, read our article.
"Can you check my coverage for me?"
We can help guide you on what questions to ask, but we’re not able to access your specific insurance details. It is the client’s responsibility to confirm coverage directly with their insurance provider prior to attending sessions.
"What if my plan only covers part of your services?"
If your insurance covers a portion of the session, you’ll simply pay the remaining balance after your appointment.
"What if my claim is denied?"
If a claim is declined, the full session fee will be charged to your credit card (or you can pay by e-transfer). We’ll provide a detailed receipt so you can follow up with your insurance provider or submit it manually if appropriate.
"I'm overwhelmed by all of this - can I talk to someone to walk me through the process?"
Absolutely. While we’re not able to verify coverage on your behalf, we’re always happy to help you understand what questions to ask so you can feel more confident navigating your benefits. Please connect with us!
